Santa Semana in Santiago

Sunday, April 03, 2016

Santiago is pretty empty during Santa Semana (Easter week.) Everyone escapes the city for the weekend, and most stores aren't open. Luckily, grocery stores stayed open, because otherwise I probably would've starved. To celebrate Semana Santa the Chilean way, we went to the Easter mass on top of Cerro San Cristobal. We took the furnicular (trolley) up to the top of the hill at about 6:30, and got to watch the sunset before the service.

We couldn't find any recent information about the service online, and each outdated website had a different time, so here are some details for future reference:

What: Easter Vigil
Where: Top of Cerro San Cristobal, specifically the benches in the picture below
When: Holy Saturday, around 8:00PM
How to Get There: You can take the furnicular up before 7pm. After the service, the trolley isn't running anymore, so you have to either walk, find someone that drove up, or call a taxi. It took us about an hour to walk from the top to the closest metro station.
